I've currently got work at the Silpe Gallery in West Hartford, CT, as part of the Williams Prize in Drawing for Emerging Artists competition.

This is very exciting, and I am not at all devastated by the cost of shipping an over-sized package from Minnesota to Connecticut.

2015 IMAGE Show

Gorecki Exhibition

Last year at the Millstream Arts Festival in Saint Joseph, MN, I won third place in the Best in Show category. This year the three winners will be showing at Gorecki Gallery at the College of Saint Benedict. The other winners are Bill Gossman and Dan Mondloch.

I started this series this February, and completed it in early May. For the size and hours each drawing took, I'd say I made pretty good time. There are nine pieces total, and will be shown in a solo show at Cambridge Center for the Arts in Winter 2016.

Found Photographs

Lately I've been occupying my time with a slightly obsessive cataloguing of found photographs. View the totality my squandered hours at the Archaic Archetypes tumblr blog, which I'm still posting to. Otherwise here are my favorites, plus commentary.

Train!

Because my grandpa is one of those people who has either no desire or no ability to relate to actual human people, he instead cultivates deep and lasting relationships with things. The result is boxes of pictures of people that have been long dead, some for for over a century, and nobody has any idea who they are. The bulk of these pictures are those.

It's a dead baby. What can you say about a dead baby? Other than, you know, a dead baby joke.

This one is just so simple and clean. A man, a boat. Awesome.

My heart is captured by 1) the sublime sun-filtered haze 2) the dapper gentleman at the gate.

Apparently my great grandmother ran and/or taught at a sewing school? The annotations on the back are cryptic. I think I like it more for the revelation that my great-grandmother actually did stuff.

Initially this picture made it's way into my "Awesome" pile because of the dainty way the Reverend is eating his watermelon among the savages (lady in the back excluded). But then I realized that they're eating at my dining room table.

The only way to make a selfie classy is to take it almost a century ago.

Genial Geriatrics

Here's a fun story from my days of working for other people. I just submitted it to Clients from Hell, because I love that site.

An adorable, frowning little old lady walks in to the shop. I say “Hello, what can I do for you?”

“What did you say?”

“What can I do for you?”

“What did you say?!”

“What can I do for you?”

I am promptly given a list of my faults.

My faults, as dictated to me by Mrs. M.

She forgot her hearing aid.
That I, foolishly, repeat what I have said after she asks “What did you say?”
She can’t hear what I’m saying.
I don’t greet customers.
Did I mention she can’t hear what I’m saying?
I grew up in the wrong time.
I am not 98.
I don’t know anything.
I did not go to college. (I did.)
I am not smarter than her.
I work with computers.
I did not put three kids through college.
I don’t know how the world works.
I didn’t learn how to greet customers at the store she worked at in college.
I have no respect.
My mother didn’t teach me anything.
My employer didn’t teach me anything.
I can’t have learned anything because I didn’t go to college.
I don’t know how to make change because nobody knows how to make change because of computers.
I am young.
I am not 98.
I am not helpful.
I am not friendly.
I have no common courtesy.
I work at a business.
I do not occupy a different time.

During this six minute jaunt into a bad situational comedy I have not spoken. I don’t know why this woman is here, yelling at me, but I am trying my very hardest not to smile. At some point near the end of her diatribe she makes a halfhearted suggestion at an apology, but immediately rescinds it because “then you wouldn’t learn anything.”

She turns to storm out. Pauses. Realizes that she probably came into this strange business that occupies the present for a reason. Digs through her purse and slams a prescription bottle on the counter.

I stare at it. She is immediately furious. “Well?! Don’t you know how to do your job?”

I do not attempt to tell her that this is a photography studio.

Another monologue is launched. I listen. Partway through she realizes her error and digs out a roll of film. “SEE!” she yells angrily, “Even I make mistakes.” The wind is momentarily taken out of her sails. She must fall back and regroup.

Twenty minutes later she has called the studio, and this time she can hear. Again irate at my youth, my stupidity, and my lack of basic human social skills. I let her fill out the form wrong and could I PLEASE just fix it so she can be done with it. She has not filled out the form wrong. I watched her fill out the form. All the necessary data has been transcribed. But I clearly do not know how to do my job, because how could they possibly know what kind of film it is if we do not write it on the package.

“They are a photo lab.” I say.

Wrong. Answer. Again, this shining deity sees it fit to shower me with gossamer threads of wisdom for another twenty minutes.
